Here are the Family Trees of people from the Eagle Mountain area. Eagle Mountain, Now rapidly passing into the realm of myth and legend, and yet immutably remaining in the hearts and memories of those who lived here and grew-up here. Currently a ghost town, it is located about 13 miles North of Desert Center, California, in the middle of the Colorado Desert. This small community began as Kaiser Steel Corporation's iron ore mining "Camp" In 1945 when Henry J Kaiser acquired the Black Eagle, Iron Chief, and Bald Eagle mining claims from Southern Pacific Railroad Agent William C. Barnes. Originally back in 1928, there had been a modest little camp here, consisting of 3 tents with wooden floors. At start up, the site for Kaiser’s acquisition to supply his 168 million dollar integrated steel plant at Fontana were the 118 mining claims purchased from William c Barnes, based on gold, silver, lead, copper and other minerals. These mining claims were credited with early gold production, of nearly $200,000,000 (1905 gold prices, over $4 Billion in today's dollars). However, Kaiser did not intend to excavate any remaining gold, but to utilize the raw iron ore, which ironically, had proven to be the primary obstacle for former gold miners. As the old adage goes, “One man’s trash, is another man’s treasure.” This couldn’t have been more true for Henry J Kaiser. When the mine shut down in 1983 the company owned town accelerated its downward spiral. Eagle Mountain's population never exceeded 3,900 people, at any one time. However, a far larger number have lived there over the four decades of operations, exceeding over 30,000. The former residents of Kaiser's town will tell you they have very fond memories of life there. You can now FIND ANYONE using the search box below the main menu on the upper left. and if you want a truly historical view, look up the old timers and prospectors with the search term: ?ZZ During its prime, the small community sported many amenities which included green grassy lawns, tree lined paved streets with sidewalks, three public schools, several churches, a bank, playgrounds, swimming pools, parks, a recreation hall which was also the theater, a couple of beauty salons, cafes, a gas station, ballparks, and a small shopping center and even a bowling alley with a bar. The U.S. Post Office evolved from a Quonset hut to a full featured facility when the Shopper's Mart was remodeled in 1959. After the mine closed that Zip Code, 92241, was transferred to Desert Hot Springs, in Coachella Valley, north of Indio. Desert Center positioned on Interstate 10, connecting Blythe and Indio, California was founded by "Desert Steve" Ragsdale in 1921, an important and colorful respite between the Coachella Valley and the Colorado River. It was moved North to its present location in 1925. The Ragsdale family has passed ownership and control of Desert Center as a result of Stanley Ragsdale's two-decade long probate settlement. San Bernardino trucking company owner Balwinder Singh Wraich bought the 1023 acres of Desert Center for $6.25 Million dollars on July 13th, 2021. Their family has indicated plans to restore, redevelop, and revive this 100-year-old gathering point between Blythe, Indio, and Parker. Lake Tamarisk is located on County Road Route 2, "Kaiser Road", two miles north of Desert Center and ten miles southeast of Eagle Mountain. It was started by Kaiser Steel Corporation, along with Kaiser affiliate Aetna Insurance, as an alternative home ownership area. With a 9-hole golf course, a multipurpose clubhouse, two swimming pools, a mobile home park and three lakes there are many amenities for employees and their families. Today, it's mostly a "snowbird community" of retired people, who seasonally come to enjoy the mild winters. As well as some year-round residents. For an "Eagle's eye view, see the aerial photography. We have three Metropolitan Water District pumping stations, in our general area: Hayfield (more recently known as "Julian Hinds," ) Iron Mountain and Eagle Mountain. They remain vital parts of the Southern California Aqueduct, which was constructed during the Roosevelt Administration's depression-era public works infrastructure programs to supply water to our Southern California coastal population centers. This liquid thread traverses our desert locality from Hoover Dam on the Colorado River to Lake Matthews, near Riverside. Adjacent to this route runs the original high-power line that forms the southern California electric grid backbone along with the more recent power transmission line from the Arizona nuclear power plants to the coastal cities.
